T-SGT E. T. SAUNDERS
The
body of T/.5 Edgar T. Saunders of Orlando. who was killed in action
while serving with the 508th Parachute Infantry Co. C, in the initial
breakthrough in Normandy in 1944, arrived here today for reburial.
Services will be held Thursday at 4 p.m. in the Carey Hand
Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. A. H. Howard of the Church of God,
officiating. Interment will follow in the Legion Plot in Greenwood
Cemetery under direction of the Orlando Memorial Post 19, American
Legion.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Charlene Saunders Middleton,
Baltimore, Md.; his mother Mrs., Mary Carter, Orlando; two brothers,
Louis Saunders and Robert Carter, Orlando; one sister, Mrs. J. L.
Memory, Seattle, and his stepfather, R. R. Carter, Orlando.

Edgar
registered for the draft on 14 February 1942 and was inducted into the
Army at Camp Blanding, FL on 14 October 1942.
Pvt Saunders was assigned to Company C, 508th PIR.
On 15 May 1943 he was appointed to the grade of Pfc and then to T/5 on
31 August.
T/5 Saunders was reported missing in action as of 6 June
1944. He was listed as killed in action on July 26, 1944 which may
indicate a late recovery of his remains
Sgt Saunders was nd was awarded the Purple Heart.
NOTE: While his grave marker states that he was in the
505th PIR, his records indicate he was a member of the 508th PIR. |
