Interment record and  head stone for 1st Lt. Joseph I. Shankey at Plot C, Row 15, Grave 12 in Brittany American Cemetery, St. James, France.

Joseph registered for the draft in Hagerstown, NY on 16 October 1940.and was inducted into the Army at New York City, NY; on 14 February 1941. The newly minted Private was assigned serial number 32007707,

He was selected for OCS, his commissioning date is unknown.

1st Lt. Shankey was killed in action on June 7, 1944 and was awarded the Purple Heart.

He was apparently elevated in rank to Captain posthumously. See street named after Capt Shankey)
