SOLDIER RITES AT MONTICELLO
Cpl. Robert L. Stutt Killed In France in 1944

 

Monticello, La. - Memorial services for Cpl Robert L. Stutt, who was killed in action in France July 4, 1944, were held Wednesday morning from Sacred Heart church. The Rev. Eugene Lorenz officiated at the requiem mass. Burial was at Oakwood cemetery, where full military rites were accorded by members of the Monticello post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Cpl. Stutt was born Sept. 1, 1920, at Anamosa and attended grade schools in that area. He graduated from the Monticello public school. He enlisted in the 508th parachute infantry in October, 1943, and went overseas shortly after that. He participated in parachute landings into France on D-day. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Stutt, of Monticello, and a sister, Mrs. Henry Furino, of Anamosa.

Grave marker for Cpl Robert L. Stutt in the Oakwood Cemetery, Monticello (Jones), Louisiana.

Robert enlisted in the Army at Camp Herrold, IA on 15 October 1942.  A volunteer for parachutist duty, he was sent directly to Camp Blanding, FL where the 58th PIR had just been activated.

Pvt Stutt, a member of Company B, was appointed to Pfc on 4 March 1944 and then to Cpl on 25 April 1944.

Cpl Stutt was killed in action on 4 July 1944 and awarded the Purple Heart as well as the Combat Infantryman Badge, both posthumously.
