PVT FRANK J. SWEETITZ

Frank, listed as Franz Swetitsch, was 8 years old when he immigrated to the U.S. from his native Austria aboard the SS Mont Clay.  He was accompanied by his mother and sister, both named Elizabeth (see lines 10 - 12).

The ship departed from Hamburg, Germany and arrived in New York city harbor on 14 June 1921.

This newspaper article listed Frank as one of the draftees from the Fords Crossing, NJ area that were heading for Fort Dix on the 10:30 a. m. train, 24 February 1943.  He apparently volunteered for parachutist duty sometime thereafter.

Pvt Sweetitz was transferred from the Parachute School, Fort Benning, GA to Co H, 508th PIR on 10 August 1943.  His stay was short-lived, however, as on 28 August he was sent to Replacement Station 990.

But he remained Airborne and was a pathfinder in HQ Company of the 509th.  He was killed by a gunshot wound to the head in the attack on Hill 84 known as Castle Hill in La Napoule, France.

Headstone Inscription and Interment Record and resulting grave marker for Pvt Frank J. Sweetitz in Plot C, Row 7, Grave 13 of the Rhone American Cemetery and Memorial, Draguignan, Departement du Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France.

Frank was killed in action in La Napoule, Departement des Alpes-Maritimes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France on 21 August 1944 as a ember of HQ Company, 509th PIR.

Pvt Sweetitz is also commemorated on the WWII Memorial in Woodbridge, NJ
