SSGT WILLIAM L. ULRICH
 

Headstone Inscription and Interment Record with resulting grave marker for SSgt William L. Ulrich at Plot D Row 8 Grave 14 in the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in Colleville-sur-Mer, France.

Sgt Ulrich was killed in action on July 4, 1944 and was awarded the Purple Heart.

Although the reason for the travel is unknown, William, at age 1, was in the company of his mother, a native of England, when they sailed from Monte Christi, Dominican Republic aboard the SS Iroquois. The ship docked in New York harbor on 29 April 1923. see lines 15 and 16.

 

Six years later he was with his mother and younger brother (lines 8-19) aboard the SS President Jefferson when it arrived in San Francisco on 21 August 1929.  The ship had taken 21 days to travel from Shanghai, China

 

 

Draft record for William L. Ulrich reveals that his father, William L., Sr. was a Major in the military which may explain the travels, above.
