M. Watts Now Officer FORT BENNING, Ga. - Afton Watts, 26, whose wife. Faye, lives
at 2529 South Lamar, Austin, was commissioned an Army second lieutenant
in infantry upon graduation from the Infantry Officer Candidate
School, Fort Benning, Ga., Nov. .6.

Texans Die In Viet Action
WASHINGTON
(AP)-A Defense Department casualty fist issued Thursday lists 73
servicemen killed in action in Vietnam. They included five Texans. Army
Capt. Afton M. Watts, husband of Mrs. Gewna F. Watts, 2580 South St,
Apartment 5, Beaumont; Capt. Marion E. Waugh, husband of Mrs. Esther A.
Waugh, 301 Lynoak Street, Marshall; Spec. 4 Garland G. Haley, son of
Mrs. Molly H. Boatwright 815 Palo Dure St.. Amarillo; Spec. John A.
Martinez, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andres Martinez, 314 Leff Place, San
Antonio.

Afton
graduated from Groves High School in Port Neches (Jefferson county),
Texas in 1957. The town is proud of its history of the
Karankawa and Atakapa native American tribes which initially
populated the area.
He married Gwena Faye Anderson in Jefferson, Texas
on 15 November 1959.
A graduate of OCS at Fort Benning. GA in 1964, Captain Watts was assigned to Co A, 508th
Infantry, probably as the company commander. He was killed by
artillery or rocket fire in Thua Tien province, Vietnam.
