PFC DONALD J. WOOD

Missing Called Dead

   NUTLEY --- Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Hess, 81 Nutley Avenue, have received word from the War Department that their nephew, Private Donald J. Wood, 20, was killed in action in France last June 7.
  . Private Wood,. paratrooper, had .been reported mining in action last June. He was in Headquarter Company of the 508th Parachute Infantry regiment that was awarded the Presidential citation in Normandy, June 6.
  Private Wood was born In New York and had resided with his uncle and aunt in Nutley since he was three years old. He was a graduate of Nutley High School and attended Rutgers University before enlisting December 10, Ha was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas over a year and later attended gunnery school at Fort Knox, Ky. He then returned to Fort Riley as an instructor. He enlisted In the paratroop in May, 1943 and was sent overseas.
   Private Wood is survived by his father, J. M. Wood, of New York City, and a sister, Miss Shirley F. Wood of the Nutley Avenue address,

Grave marker for Pfc Donald J. Wood at Plot K Row 18 Grave 16 in Brittany American Cemetery, St. James, France.

Pvt Wood joined Hq 3d on 27 October 1943.  He was listed as missing in action as of June 6, 1944.

Pfc Wood was killed in action on June 7, 1944 and was awarded the Purple Heart.

This commemorative certificate was issued by the ABMC.

His military decorations include the posthumous award of the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantryman Badge.
