Edward had early military aspirations as
he was a member of the ROTC while attending a Chicago-area high school.
In fact, in 1937, Cadet Zielke received the Tribune medal awarded by the
war department for proficiency in military training.
2/Lt. Edward B. Zielke was transferred
from the "7th Rcn Sq" to Company G, 508th PIR on 11 November 1942.
On 17 November 1942 he was placed on
Special duty with the Medial Detachment.
Lt Zielke was appointed as the
assistant platoon leader for Company G's 2nd platoon on 6 January 1943.
He was reassigned in the same role for
the 3rd platoon on January 10th.
On 21 January 1943 he was designated
as the Regimental Range Officer in addition to his other duties.
The lieutenant was transferred to
the 515th PIR at Fort Benning, GA as of 27 March 1943. However, he
was in the 507th PIR when he was killed in action. |
