
Chester Graham was feeling the exhilaration of a small victory.
His unit successfully had directed artillery onto a
small town church knocking out the German spotter in the belfry who had been calling in fire on the Americans.
But as the US troops savored the moment Graham says “A young French girl came up and said ‘Who is in charge here? My father was praying in that church ’” She said he was dead “What are you going to do?”
Graham falls into a moment of embarrassed silence just as he did 50 years ago/
“I just said “We can’t do anything about it. This is war”.
