Lawrence (Larry) G. Fitzpatrick - HQ 1st

I volunteered for airborne training on the 19th October 1942.

I parachuted into Normandy on D-Day, 6th June 1944.

A few months later, on September 17th 1944, I parachuted into Holland in the vanguard of the forces determined to liberate the Netherlands.

In November 1944, the 508 regiment was relieved from combat in Holland and moved to France for training and rest.

However the Germans launched a desperate attack to save the Third Reich which resulted in the Battle of the Bulge.

On December 18th 1944, the 508th was ordered to move to Belgium to block the advancing German army and help destroy the Bulge.

In months of strenuous fighting in the deep snows of the Ardennes in bitter cold weather, the regiment penetrated into the Siegfried line and helped destroy its fortifications and drive on to the west bank of the River Roar, the threshold of Germany.
