Brigadier general to speak
HICKORY — The Lake Hickory Rotary Club will have a brigadier
general as guest speaker at its regular meeting at noon Tuesday in the
ballroom of Lake Hickory Country Club. Brig Gen Charles Swannack Jr.,
deputy director of strategy plans and policy will speak on strategy
and future planning to fulfill future US military requirements.
Swannack was commissioned as a second lieutenant of infantry from the
US Military Academy in 1971. His first assignment was with the Berlin
Brigade Federal Republic of Germany from 1972 to 1975 where he served
as a rifle platoon leader, scout platoon leader rifle. company executive
officer and aide-de-camp.
From 1976 to 1979 Swannack served at Fort Bragg as S3, Air and Alpha
Company Commander, First Battalion (Airborne) 508th Parachute Infantry
Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division.
He then served as a training and emergency deployment readiness exercise
officer at XVIII Airborne Corps From 1981 to 1984.
Swannack taught mechanical engineering as an associate professor at
the US Military Academy. From 1985 to 1991 he served with the 9th Infantry
Regiment at Fort Ord Calif. His initial duty was an executive officer
3rd Battalion and subsequently as Regimental S3 and Regimental Executive
Officer He later assumed command of the 2nd Battalion 9th Infantry Regiment/
From 1992 to 1994 Swannack served as politico-military planner and
chief Caribbean Basin Branch Strategic Plans and Policy Directorate
J5 on the joint staff.. He assumed command of the 2nd Brigade 25th Infantry
Division (Light) in June 1994.
From January to June 1995 he deployed the brigade to Haiti and conducted
peacekeeping operations during Operation Uphold Democracy. Swannack
was responsible for maintaining a secure and stable environment in the
capital city of Port-au-Prince.
From April 1996 to June 1997 Swannack served as the Chief of Staff,
25th Infantry Division (Light) and US Army Hawaii. He then served for
a year as assistant division commander for operations 82nd Airborne
Division He assumed duties as the deputy director for strategy plan
and policy office of the deputy chief of staff for operations and plans
headquarters Department of the Army in August 1998.
