John E. McCants, 79, a devoted husband and loving father who was a resident of Hartford since 1957, and formerly of Winnsboro, South Carolina, died late Monday afternoon, (October 4, 2010) at his residence, surrounded by his loving family. He was born and educated in Winnsboro, SC a son of the late Ulice and Alice (Ruff) McCants .
John was a veteran of the Korean War serving with the United States Army. He was employed for over thirty-five years with the former Amerbelle Textile Corporation in Rockville from which he retired in 1992.
He was preceded in death by his brother Moses McCants . He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Annie B. (Cook) McCants and leaves three loving sons, James M. McCants and his wife Leslie, Joe L. McCants and Michael A. McCants and his companion Tonya Sheridan all of Hartford; five brothers, Ulysses of Windsor, Benjamin of Hartford, Odell, James and Theodore all of Virginia; two sisters, Ethel Miller of Windsor and Margaret Gray of Virginia; three grandsons, Tyree and his wife Kashima, Corey and his wife Monique and Shawn and his companion Jaselyn; one granddaughter, Michelle and her friend Gregory Bennett; three great grandchildren, Tatyana Williams, Cameron and Kenley McCants; three aunts, Minnie Cloud, Lou Woodward and Annie Lee Woodward all of SC; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends.
His funeral will be held Tuesday, October 12th at 12 noon at the Christ Temple Church of God in Christ, 183 Tower Ave., in Hartford. Friends and relatives may call at the church Tuesday morning from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. Burial with military honors will conclude at the CT State Veteran's Cemetery in Middletown.
