9 March 1944

IN NORTHERN IRELAND
by
T/5 E. H. “Gene” Barton

Brownsville. Texas
April 1987

The sketch of the cart, horse and man was made on our camp grounds. Because we had no sewerage the waste from our latrines was collected each day and hauled away.

I remember the charisma of the man who tended this chore. He was quiet, very courteous, knowledgeable and efficient. He was neatly dressed, and always wore a neck tie as [he] was a gentle man.

He was an example that it is NOT the job that adds dignity to the man … it is the MAN who adds dignity to the job.
