WHEREAS, the 508 Parachute Infantry Regiment was organized
at Camp Blanding on October 20, 1942; and
: .„,, WHEREAS, the 508 Parachute Infantry Regiment was the
only Regiment formed in the State of Florida and became
attached to the 82nd Airborne Division in 1944; and
WHEREAS, the 508 Parachute Infantry Regiment won the
presidential unit citation Eor heroic performance in the
D-Day Normandy Invasion on June 6, 1944, where they suffered
more than 50 percent casualties of approximately 2,200 men
while protecting this country's cherished freedom; and
WHEREAS, the 508 Pararchute [sic] Infantry Regiment
participated in the Holland invasion on September, 17, 1944
, and in the Battle of the Bulge in December, 1944; and
WHEREAS, the 508 Parachute Infantry Regiment received
several awards from France, Holland and Belgium, and was
chosen as General Dwight D. Elsenhower's honor guard at the
end of World War II; and
WHEREAS, the 508 Parachute Infantry Regiment has 13 of
its members still residing in Clay County, and neighboring
Duval and St. Johns County.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of County
Commissioners, Clay County Florida, hereby wishes to commend
the 508 Parachute Infantry Regiment for its heroic efforts
to protect the citizens of the United States.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board of County
Commissioners, Clay County, Florida, wishes to extend, on
behalf of all Clay County citizens, its sincere thanks and
praise to those residents in the tri-county area that served
in the 508 Parachute Infantry Regiment.
DULY ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners, Clay
