West Point Cadet Boxer Thomas J. B. Shanley was the Eastern Intercollegiate Champion in 1938 and Welterweight Champion in 1939 (Courtesy Irv Shanley) Cadet Thomas James Bartley Shanley was commissioned a 2nd Lt. after graduating from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1939.
   During the D-Day invasion of Normandy, LTC Shanley led the 2nd Battalion of the 508th PIR on June 6, 1944 along with troopers from other units to Hill 30 near Picauville and Ste. Mere Eglise where they held off strong assaults from German forces trying to reach the beaches to repel the American landings there. Biography.

JUMP SCHOOL! Lieutenant Thomas J.B. Shanley prepares to make a qualifying jump while attending the Parachute Jump School at Fort Benning, GA in August 1941.
