Proclamation

WHEREAS,

Fayetteville is happy to welcome the veterans of the famed
508th Parachute Infantry Regiment who will be celebrating the
Fortieth anniversary of their activation, and;

WHEREAS,

as part of the 82nd Airborne Division during world War II, the
508th participated in the Jump into Normandy on D-Day, and;

WHEREAS,

the regiment went on to take part in the airborne operation in
Holland at Nijmegen, and was sent to Belgium to help stop the
German attack during the Battle of the Bulge, and;
WHEREAS, the regiment was chosen by general Dwight D. Eisenhower to serve
as Honor Guard at SHAEF Headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany at the
end of the war in Europe;

NOW THEREFORE I, John w. Harley, Mayor of the City of Fayetteville, North
Carolina do hereby proclaim October 21, 22, 23, and 24 A.D., 1982 to be

 

508th PARACHUTE INFANTRY REGIMENT DAYS

in Fayetteville and urge all citizens to take cognizance of the special
events arranged for this time for the veterans and families of one of the
greatest military organizations in the history of the world.
