SATURDAY, MAY 29, 2004 NIJMEGEN, HOLLAND - BRIDGES OVER WAAL AND MAAS RIVERS
Nijmegen Bridge across the Waal River was a key prize sought after by the 508th when they hit this area
Central Span Structure This "Bowstring Through Truss" design would have been a tough target for bombs. The approach spans with their arched support could have been dropped more easily by sappers laying explosives underneath. (Photo courtesy Ellen Peters)
Peaceful Today this side of the river was held by the German Army and they put up very stiff resistance
The South Mill was an observation post for the allied forces. The mill survived the war relatively undamaged.
Maas River Bridge near the town of Grave was another key objective that had to be taken intact. The bridge was taken by 504th PIR. One company landed on the south side while the rest landed on the north of the bridge.
Still Intact The nine identical span segments still carry traffic across the Maas River
