MARGRATEN - AMERICAN CEMETERY

Memorial Day Crowd
Attendees arrive in droves for the holiday observance at Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten

Reflecting Pool
in the middle of the Court of Honor captures the image of the monument tower and statuary "The Mourning Woman"

The Mourning Woman
overlooking the reflecting pool, stands this bronze figure with its three attendant doves and a new shoot sprouts from the war ravaged tree.

Near the statue is the inscription:

"NEW LIFE FROM WAR'S DESTRUCTION PROCLAIMS MAN'S IMMORTALITY AND HOPE FOR PEACE"

Inscription reads as:
EACH FOR HIS OWN MEMORIAL
EARNED PRAISE THAT WILL NEVER DIE
AND WITH IT
THE GRANDEST OF ALL SEPULCHERS
NOT THAT IN WHICH
HIS MORTAL BONES ARE LAID
BUT A HOME
IN THE MINDS OF MEN
