CAUQUIGNY CHURCHYARD


Cauquigny Chapel
is just 600 yards NNW of Hill 30

the Merderet River is in front while the La Fiére Causeway is off photo to the immediate left

it would have been easy to spot enemy activity from Hill 30 using binoculars

Looking Back
Hill 30 can be seen just across the Merderet. The Iron Mike statue is between the two flags

Cauquigny Conflict
panel recognizes various regiments and key players.  Medals won by members of the units are also depicted
 

Causeway Conflict
the contest to take control of the La Fiére Causeway was a fierce battle.  The 325th GIR (were first across the causeway on June 9, 1944

Village Squire
was named after Captain Rae of the 507th

Chapel Graveyard
is directly adjacent to th church itself

Enough To Wake The Dead
some of the balusters in this iron fence have been struck by small arms fire

A Simple Nick
can be seen where a bullet ricocheted of the edge of a baluster

Not So Simple Nick
the corner baluster has at least three nicks but two others have been severed
Dangerous Place
imagine what it was like to dodge both bullets and flying bits of metal carved out of these railings

Flying Concrete Too
chunks of this gravestone were also knocked out by small arms fire

Bronze Tablet
honoring the 507th was placed on the church wall in June 2000

Colonel Wayne Pierce
was similarly honored in August 2007
Stained Glass Window
remained intact facing away from the causeway remained intact
Seen from within
its colors are bright in the sunlight
Repaired  Window
is not as nice looking.  A project is underway to collect funds to replace it
