*Mayer had suffered a double hernia at Camp Mackall and was prohibited from jump training.  Without parachutist's wings, he crossed the channel on a boat and landed on Omaha Beach on D+1.  He caught up with the 508th and served as an infantryman and cook for the next 32 days.  Once back in England, he completed jump training and, now disqualified from cook status, transferred into the medics.  He earned the CMB in Holland however..  Read biography
