SITREP 508/1 - 5 - 19 AUGUST 2020

   1. Commander’s Comments: During the reporting cycle, 1FURY hosted the Brigade innovation council for Division’s Line of Effort #1: Unbeatable LGOPs. At this stage, we identify two key decisions for building Unbeatable LGOPs: 1) centralize or decentralize the path to building Unbeatable LGOPs at the Battalion or Brigade level; and 2) train unbeatable LGOPs against their primary MOS tasks or collectivize training across MOSs. Cross-training, for example, could apply in a scenario where an 11B helps a 105mm gun crew load rounds during an airfield seizure. The challenge we see is overcoming the “assemble to fight” mentality that prohibits Paratroopers from focusing first on eliminating the enemy and clearing the airfield. Going forward, we will seek ways to instill a “fight to assemble” culture. Part of this is holding ourselves accountable to “train as we fight.”
   2. Brief summary of activities over the last two weeks by LOE

·         1FURY Paratrooper of the Week: PFC Ashley Garcia, HHC/1-508 PIR. PFC Garcia hails from Caracas, Venezuela and is assigned as the Battalion S4 supply clerk. PFC Garcia is playing a critical role in the Delta Company Change of Command by filling in the void as the primary supply representative for Delta Company while simultaneously conducting her S4 DTS A/OPC duties for the Battalion. PFC Garcia took the initiative to ensure that Delta Company was set up for success by compiling the most up to date component listings and technical manuals as well as assisting the company executive officer with all supply related administrative tasks. PFC Garcia is an exceptional young Paratrooper and a huge asset to Delta Company and 1-508th PIR.

·         Unbeatable LGOPs. In addition to leading 3BCT’s Unbeatable LGOP innovation council, the Battalion is on Day 6 of a 10 day field problem – Fury Fight One – to train on individual and crew-served marksmanship, team live fires, MORTEP, AASLT, command post and support operations.

Right: SPC Palmer and SPC Wilder, J/1-508, troubleshoot a deadlined D/1-508 vehicle at the UMCP.

·         Deploy, Fight, and Win Anywhere in 18 Hours. 1FURY was the decisive operation for 3BCT’s P-STORM exercise last week. The Battalion exited 131 personnel, two rolling stock platforms, and 12 CDS bundles. Additional Paratroopers linked up on the drop zone for a total of 241 trained. Training highlights include clearing the airfield, seizing terminal control facilities, establishing two mortar firing points, and conducting follow-on movement to contacts that incorporated scouts, gun trucks, and fire support from 81mm mortars.

·         Transform the Division. Throughout Fury Fight One, the Battalion experimented with solutions to use existing vehicles to establish more functional C2 platforms. Similar to FORSCOM’s Command Post Directed Requirement (CPDR) initiative to convert expando vans into command nodes, we are currently retrofitting old FLAs to install radio mounts and works stations. If successful, these vehicles will enhance TOC mobility and survivability by reducing the requirement for tents and generators.

FLA Modification TOC Left: SPC James, J/1-508, drills holes into a FLA for vehicle antenna installation. Right: 2LT Waggener, HHC/1-508, receives instruction from Fury 5 inside the Battalion Main Command Post.

·         Live the Legacy. 1FURY Paratroopers take great pride in the conversion of the Battalion Classroom into the Battalion Gym. After laying astro-turf down, each company painted their Company logo on the wall space. When complete, the gym will not only provide a facility for exercise, but a space for Paratroopers to feel connected to their respective companies and the Battalion.

SFC Ortega, HHC/1-508 PIR, completes the final company logo in the Battalion Gym.

. 3. Way Ahead: Describe activities/training events over the next two weeks aligned against the Division’s 4 Lines of Effort.

·         Unbeatable LGOPs. 1FURY will begin an initiative to add an obstacle course, dry fire lane, knock out a bunker lane, and an urban assault course within the Battalion footprint. The lanes will provide opportunities to incorporate combat related tasks, to include dry fire drills, into physical training while better replicating a combat environment. This will allow Paratroopers to adjust their kit accordingly as they conduct PT and thus “train as you fight.”

·         Deploy, Fight, and Win Anywhere in 18 Hours. The Battalion will dedicate maintenance support and installation of communication equipment on its rolling stock this week and the week following. The priority is on priority vehicle list rolling stock required for IRB1 assumption and ORS inspection.

·         Transform the Division. 1FURY will initiate next week a LPD program with a “breakfast” meeting schedule nested with Division and Brigade LPD priorities and enduring efforts. The intent for the “breakfast” meetings are to provide weekly touchpoints that bring cross functional teams together from across the battalion to determine best practices and innovate across the ALL AMERICAN

4. Highlights of Future Training/Key Events: 3 weeks to 1 year.

·        Highlights on future deployments (units/individuals). N/A

·         Requests for Assistance/Help. N/A

·         Emerging Opportunities. Establishing Integrated Tactical Network hubs into air droppable vehicle platforms for integration during P-STORM 2 and SR-21.

·         Possible CG training event visits. Platoon Live Fires, 22-24 September.
