READJUSTMENT ALLOWANCES
The readjustment allowance is money allowed Veterans of World
War II, while completely or partially unemployed at a weekly wage of
less than $23. It is
also paid to self-employed Veterans whose net earnings for a
month are less than $100*. The Veteran will have two 2 years time
in which to claim this Allowance. If you decide to sign up in the Army
for three years you will still have two years in which to claim this money
after you
get out
To be eligible you must be registered
with the employment office. งelf-employed Vets do not have to register. If
you have less than 10 months service you will be eligible for only a proportionate share of the
benefit. To apply for benefits go to any one of the following places: US POST
OFFICE, US EMPLOYMENT SERVICE, or the designated free employment office
[of] the States, Territories, or possessions. You must
take your discharge papers with you. YOU CANNOT FILE A CLAIM
unless in the States, Territories, or possessions.
You will have to file a claim for allowances each week or as otherwise
required by your State laws. These laws will also state how often you will be paid during the
month.
Partial unemployment is when a man works less than his normal customary full-time
hours because of lack of work, and earns less than $23.
If you arc getting money for school you cannot apply for unemployment
compensation. The same applies to money received as pension.
Listed are some of the main reasons for disqualifications
and what happens:
l. Voluntarily leaving suitable employment
2. Failing to apply for suitable employment when referred. (you must take
a job if it is in your line).
3. Suspension or discharge for misconduct
in the course of his employment.
4. Refusing to accept suitable employment when offered. (you can't
tell them to jam it)
5. Failure to accept a free training course.
.. These are some of the reasons a Vet maybe disqualified from
getting money from 1 to 5 weeks and even more can be assessed
for other disqualifications.
* Self- Employed Veterans, who work for profit in an independent
trade, establishments, business, profession, or other
vocation and has net earnings less than $100 is entitled to receive
the difference. Net earnings from self-employment include total income less
necessary expenses spent in making such income. Personal or family
expenses are not deductible.
.. If a Vet moves to another area within his state, ho
should repo
t his presence to the public employment office nearest his new
address. A fine of $1,000, or imprisonment or both are
the penalties for fraudulent claims. |

High School and College Credits
The Library has a copy of "A Guide to the Evaluation of Educational
Experiences in the Armed Services". This is the publication of the American Council of Education which recommends to schools
and colleges the amount of
credit which should be granted for schools, and training centers
attended and for work of an educational experience in the armed forces.
This Guide contains
a listing of every recognized school operated by the Army and the suggested amount of credit
for each course. It is not compulsory on any
school to grant the amount of credit recommended but it is expected
that most will follow the recommendations closely.
Those men whose high school course was interrupted and those who plan
on going to college
under the GI Bill should look into the possibilities of getting credits
for their work in the army. A copy of USAFI Form #47
is included in the Guide. This is the form which must be filled out
and sent to the school which you plan on attending. It may also be sent to your
employer in civilian life in order to get credit
for schools which you may have attended.
.. Of the first 7,000 men who applies for credits on the basis of their
military work,
five out of every 100 were granted enough credit to get their
high school diploma and 28 received some credit. The figures
for college credits were comparable
.. You should ser the I and E Officer at the Reception or Separation Center
for a USAFI Form #47 to make application for credit. It will be much easier
to get this form properly certified to while your records are still available.

have a closed shop.
