Vol. 1, No. 5 "PUBLISHED ABOARD THE MADAWASKA VICTORY"   October 2, 1945

NATIONAL SERVICE LIFE INSURANCE

Your National Service Life Insurance policy is a valuable contract. You wi11 never get a rate as cheap from a civilian company. This is bound to be so for the Government pays all costs of administration of this insurance which is a substantial part of the cost of any policy. Also, the cost of special features such as waiver of premiums in case of total disability, which in private contracts must be paid for by an addition to the premium, are paid by the government.   Another feature that makes for a cheap rate is the relatively low age of most servicemen insured under NSLI with consequent low losses.
The running of NSLI is a function of the Veterans Administration, and not to any other agency.  All income from insurance premiums are segregated from other government funds.
Premiums for this insurance are based on the same mortality tables that all private insurance companies use.  Any profits are required by law to be paid in the form of dividends.  However, up to the present any profits which might have been realized have been used up by a liberalization of the policy provisions. Consequently, these policies have become even more valuable.
Recently, the original five year term of all NSLI policies was extended to eight years. So you can continue your policy for its present amount or for any lesser amunt in multiples of $500 but not lass than $l000 total for at least three more years.
NSLI is for the protection of your dependents, consequently, the proceeds are payable in monthly payments only.
Premiums after discharge must be paid directly to the Veterans Administration each month unless you write and request permission to change to a quarterly, semi-annual or annual basis. The method of payment must not be changed before hearing from the VA, or your policy will lapse. The premium will be exactly the same as you have been paying until the end of eight years.
After you have gotten re-established again in civilian life you will want to convert your policy to a permanent form. This may be done anytime after the policy has been in force for one year and must be done before the end of the eighth year. The costs under a permanent type of policy will, of course, be greater for under this
