WIESBADEN, Oct. 8—Red
Devils of the 508th Pcht. Inf. Regt. struck one tremendous
aerial blow in the final minute of play yesterday to defeat
the 526th Armd. Battle Axes, 7-0, in a USFET League contest
before 12,000 here.
Big Jim Kurz, former University of Maryland back, passed 57
yards to end Billy, Holbrook who speared the ball over his
left shoulder on the Battle Ax 23-yard line and outran the
frantic 526th defensemen to the end zone. The entire play
covered 80-yards.
The victory, fourth this season for the undefeated 508th
eleven, enabled the Red Devils to retain an undisputed hold
on first place.
Despite a 1 to 7 deficit in first downs, the Troopers posted
* Statistical advantage on the ground and in the air in a
game that was predominantly defensive in character. They
netted 95 yards to 62 in rushing and three of their 13 passes
gained an additional 113 yards. The 526th completed three of
nine passes for 49 yards.
Late in the last
period the game opened up with -the Battle Axes launching an
aerial attack that carried them from their own 37 to the Red
Devil 20. A fourth-down field goal attempt failed and the
508th took over on its own 20. On
the first play of the series, Kurz, 6-foot, 2-inch
205-pounder waited until Holbrook was well past midfield and
then tossed the pass that won the game. Guido Mastrioni
[Mastroianni] kicked the extra point.
