Taking A Break
from some arduous tactical training during World War II are members of Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment. This photo was probably taken at Camp Mackall, North Carolina sometime in 1943. In the front row from the left are W. Parrish (Virginia), Dominick G. Yanchunas (Pennsylvania), Robert F. Kiley (Massachusetts), and Edsel Malone (Arkansas), in the back row from the left are Clarence V. Lewis (Ohio), Eugene C. (Andy) Bartlett (Illinois), and John B. Vogel (Michigan). All seven paratroopers jumped into Normandy, France June 6, 1944 (D-Day) with the 82nd Airborne Division. Private Malone was killed in action June 7, 1944. Corporal Kiley was captured in Normandy June 6, 1944 after a furious battle with the Germans in which he was wounded and lost an eye. Corporal Kiley was repatriated after 11 months imprisonment and died June 12, 1946. He is buried in the Calvary Cemetery in Greenfield, Massachusetts. Corporal Yanchunas was captured June 6, 1944 and repatriated in July 1945.  He died in 1982.

Chow Call
date and location unknown but the uniform and equipment look too neat for the photo to have been taken in combat.
