Lt. Robert
Weaver, son of Mrs. Mary Weaver of 305 E. Third st., is spending a
45-day furlough at home after serving three years in the European
theater. He has reenlisted in the army and upon termination of his furlough
will report to Frankfurt, Germany for reassignment. Lt. Weaver was a member of the 508th Paratrooper Infantry Regiment
of the famed 82nd Airborne Division for three years and saw service
with this unit in the French and Holland invasion and battles in
Germany. He was wounded twice in Europe and has the following
awards: Purple Heart and one cluster, bronze star, and citations
from Belgium and Holland. While in Frankfurt, Germany, Lt.
Weaver was appointed as one of General Eisenhower's honor guard. His brother, Thomas, a private in the marines, is also home on a
ten-day furlough, and another brother T/5 Ralph Weaver is serving
with the Engineers in Japan.

MAN FROM MARS
Smilin' Joe Lopez, parachute infantryman, has dropped in on the
Garden for the A. A. U. boxing championships.
He will represent the 82d Airborne as a light-heavy. Joe is from
Hawaii, was with the 508th Parachute Infantry, which served as Gen
Eisenhower's honor guard at Frankfort.

The
quickest knockout of the affair, scored in 29 seconds of the first
round, actually resulted from the collapse of an injured knee
. . . . Pfc Joe Lopez, 82d Airborne Division, representing Greenville,
S. C, in the light-heavyweight division, was knocked to the canvas by
Wisbury Bascom of St. Louis, Mo., tried to get up three times, but
failed.
. . . Lopez: wasn't as badly hurt as many thought when he was carried from
the ring, but had twisted a week-old injury suffered in a parachute jump
at Fort .Bragg, N.C.
