SPC DONALD D. WAHL

Grave marker for Donald D. Wahl in Graceland Cemetery, Blanchardville (Lafayette county), Wisconsin.

 

   Specialist Third Class Donald Duwayne Wahl, 22, was killed in a head-on collision near Pembroke, Ky., on November 17, 1956.
   He was born on June 1, 1934 at Dayton, Wis., and was baptized by Rev. M.J. Olson and confirmed in the Blanchardville Lutheran Church by Rev. T. Kleven. He attended grade school in New Glarus and Loyalty school and two years of high school in Blanchardville and graduated from Hazel Green high school in 1952.
   On December 10, 1952, he enlisted in the Airborne Division of the Army and received his Basic Airborne Course in Fort Benning, Ga., from which he graduated June 19, 1953. He spent one year in Japan and returned to Fort Campbell, Ky., to join the 101st Airborne Division Artillery in July of this year. He had 47 parachute jumps to his credit and one more jump to receive his Senior Wings.
   Sgt. Dencil L. Rogers, best friend of the deceased, acted as Military Escort and arrived at Oregon, Wis., on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, where the Dobson-Johnson Legion Color Guard met and escorted the remains to the Saether Funeral Home.
   Survivors are his parents, Ben M. and Marie Wahl of Blanchardville; eight brothers, Quinton and Vernon of Portage; Doral of Evansville; Robert of Beloit; Jerry with the Marines at San Diego, Calif.; Gene of Argyle; Franklin and Richard at home; four sisters, June of Hazel Green; Ruth with the Women's Air Corps, San Antonio, Texas; Helen and Shirley at home; his maternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Werner Kubly, Madison, and two little nieces.
   Military funeral services were conducted by Rev. Norman Anderson at the Blanchardville Lutheran Church Nov. 23 at 1:30 p.m.
   Pallbearers were Luther and LeVohn Strommen, LaVerne Wahl, Willis Wahl, Dean Hanson, Aldine Sponem.
   There were many beautiful flowers and memorials.
   Memorial Services were held for him Nov. 20 at Fort Campbell, Ky.
