SECRET
REPORT NO. 888 |
OVERRUN BY
4TH ARMD |
On 5 July they evacuated all allied AB and air
personnel to RHEIMS
but I remained in RENNES as interpreter. On 26
July I was sent to the
"allied PW hospital in RENNES to act s interpreter
for the head doctor.
On 2 August I heard that the Americans were coming
rapidly, so I
went into the town during the day and came back at
night to the hospital.
They started to evacuate all the staff, and the
doctor told me that I
was to go with them to BORDEAUX. I pleaded
with him to leave me behind
and he finally consented. On the morning of 4
August I met the
4th Armored Division coming into RENNES.

SUGGESTIONS:
|
I think that the
reason that more people don't try
to escape is that they are discouraged by the
distance that
they have to ravel, even fifty miles, by knowing no
French, by the fear of being shot while escaping, by
the fear of reprisals on the prisoners left behind,
and by the physical and mental weaknesses caused by
prison life. |
