FISH FRY
by Earnest W. Stewart

Another Interesting Letter From Pfc Stewart - -

June 4 1945

   Dear Uncle Aunt and All:
After getting back from a deer and fishing trip I was through my dresser drawers and cleaning them out a bit. I ran on to one of your letters which reminded me I hadn't wrote you for some time so I'll try and drop you a few lines tonight.
I don't mind walking my feet off hunting deer so we won't have to eat these C-rations but after walking 25 or 30 miles up a mountain and not get one you still eat C-ratios after you get back.
I am In the heart of mountains and it sure is beautiful. Snow capped mountains all around Hitler's hideout just up the hill which everyone of us has searched inside out, a big lake for boat riding, swimming and fishing. Plenty of good trout in all the mountain streams but it's hard to find fish hooks and a home made one won't bold a very large trout.
We have ball games, horse shoe tournaments, races and many other things to take our time up when we are not pulling guard. We are living where Hitler kept his S S troops and its really nice. This little room is is good as any room in your house and is really fixed up with a hard wood floor, newly papered and Ferguson got a German radio to working so we are set up O.K. if we don't move someplace else but you know the army as quick as you get things so you can enjoy life a little it's time to move.
The paper stated today that troops In the ETO would get more fresh food from now on and believe me I'm ready for some of it for powdered milk, eggs, spuds and carrots make you fat but I just don't go crazy over them altho we get all we can eat. I am pretty well satisfied now for if I'm in the army 10 years I don't expect to ever get things nicer than I have them now. It certainly beats a fox hole or a parachute even if I do enjoy jumping .(Ha Ha) If I could stay out of the guard house and they'd stop fining me ever time I turned around I believe I could save a little money out of $120 a month as all we can spend is about $100 a week for PX rations. Sometime& a few bottles of beer but you know I would throw my money away like that. (Huh)

Seese just came in with a few fish so I'll stop this letter and get ready for a fit fish fry. I'll finish this letter tonight.
Well, here I am at it again Got the trouts cleaned and a couple of the boys frying them so I'll try and finish this while there putting the finishing touch to them. Wish I had some of Grandma's biscuits to go with them Boy! That would right at home wouldn't it?
A few of the boys' are going home as they have plenty of points butt you know how I stand, just a few which won't get me home very soon but will get me to the Pacific O.K. I wrote Gene and told' him to meet me in Tokyo (Ha- Ha) Wouldn't that be an honor? It's one I don't want very bad:
You said in your letter if I wanted anything just say so, so here it Is, a package filled with candy and cookies will suit me fine."
I hope this finds you all OK and getting ready for a big harvest I had my harvest with the Jerrys and didn't make much profit off the crop altho it was a pretty good one.
Jim I hope you never have to go but if you do join the Paratroops and I'll jump in the same stick with you, no not in front, I want behind so I can kick you out. Bill's a little light. A chute would pop him around like a rag-doll but he could make it if he thinks he'd like that a fellow gets every thrill every time unless he's out of his mind for I've never failed to get it yet. The Air Corps says coming in on a wing and a Prayer but for us a chute and gun for we know that most of us rough necks are too (Continuedar gone for a prayer to save us. Ha Ha)
It's $55 to 3 years in the guard house if you are caught foolin' around with a German woman but some of them is good enough look-in' that a fellow takes a chance once in a while.
President Truman figured out I'd be old enough to vote next election so he talked to the Senate and promoted me to Pfc One big stripe on my arm now. (Ha Ha)
I believe the fish are about ready to eat so I'll sign off for now so I'll be sure and get me share.
Hoping you are all OK and I am in the best of health weighing only 184 pounds. I'll soon be big enough to be considered a man .
   Answer soon
   Love to all
       Earnest (Pfc Earnest W Stewart)
