MESSAGE
FROM THE TRANSPORT COMMANDER
"On behalf
of the permanent staff I welcome all of you to the Madawaska
Victory. We shall do our best to make your trip home as pleasant as
possible. You will find the ship crowded and experience numerous
small inconveniences. In this regard I should like to quote a
message from the Chief of Transportation: "To expedite the
redeployment of troops to the Pacific and the return of others to
the U.S., we have resorted to overberthing on this ship. This
necessitates that only two hot meals and a light lunch will be
served on the home trip. The sale of food is absolutely prohibited
on this ship.
You will
be served sufficient food to satisfy your normal needs.
If you are not satisfied, report the matter to your Commanding
Officer or Mess Officer so that corrective action can be taken.”
“It is
realized that overberthing will cause some inconveniences, but
sufficient life rafts, life boats and life preservers are aboard for
everyone in case of need.”
We ask you
to overlook these inconveniences in order that redeployment may be
speeded up and the early return of those to follow is assured.”
EMERY E.
DYKE

MADAWASKA
VICTORY TO LAND IN N.Y.
“With
reasonable good sailing weather, we should see the Statue of Liberty
in lower New York harbor about next Thursday. Probably you have
been wondering what happens after that, well, here in general is the
story.
“We may tie up at Staten island or North River Terminal, Manhattan.
Or in case we are to be processed at Camp Shanks we’ll probably
proceed up the Hudson River past New York City and drop anchor in
midstream. If we dock at either Staten or Manhattan piers troops
will be carried to the New Jersey shore of the Hudson by ferry and
there trains will be waiting to take them to Camp Kilmer, located
about thirty-five miles from New York near New Brunswick, N.J. At
Camp Shanks, located thirty miles north of New York City
