Madawaska Victory (Cont’d from Page 1)

Troops are unloaded from ship onto small boats and carried ashore. From shore it is about five miles by truck convoy to Camp Shanks. “Camp Shanks and Kilmer are called Disposition Centers-sort of staging centers in reverse. Ordinarily you stay at the disposition center only 24 to 48 hours, just long enough to have
 • your records brought up to date.
 • your souvenirs and trophys checked,
 • medical inspection if necessary,
 • field equipment withdrawn and worn clothing replaced,
 • money orders and foreign currency exchanged,
 • arrangements made for trains to move you on to the reception center
“Due to the short stay at the disposition centers, there are no passes, no visitors and no pay. You may telephone or telegraph home at your own expense. Mail will be distributed if possible. Blood tests for venereal disease will be given if time [illegible]

"All Army personnel arriving in the U.S., regardless of the fact that their orders nay already indicate that they are returning for discharge and the separation center to which they are to proceed, must first go to the disposition center. There are no exceptions. "All groups move from the disposition center to the reception station or separation center by rail on Government Transportation Requests. Individual travel is not permitted. Travel will be by Pullman if journey is longer than twelve hours and if equipment is available. However, groups are not held up pending Pullman accommodations. Processing and facilities at the reception station and separation centers will be discussed in another article tomorrow. ******

"If you have any particular question concerning processing at the disposition center or at the reception or separation centers write them down and place them in the box in Square #2 Hatch, near the piano. They will be answered in subsequent issues.
