ARRIVAL HOME
TELEGRAMS
Telegrams announcing your
arrival home are available to all members of the Armed Forces.
The cost of these telegrams is 31¢ (25¢ plus 6¢ for tax).
These messages are fixed text as follows:
HOME SAFELY. EXPECT TO SEE
YOU SOON
DON'T ATTEMPT TO CALL OR WRITE ME
HERE. LOVE (YOUR NICKNAME)
Addresses are limited to
continental "U.S. These messages are taken to the Western Union
Telegraph Office immediately upon arrival which is 12 or more hours
before you will be able to get to a telephone or send a message of your
own composition. These messages are in no way compulsory, but
rather are sponsored by the Ports of Embarkation as the most
convenient way for arriving troops to notify families and friends.
Due to
the large number of troops arriving daily and resulting congestion
it is often difficult to get to the telegraph office at Disposition
Centers.
Telegraph forms are available
at the Library, Room 18. Telegrams will be accepted by the
Library Attendant.

PROCESSING
As mentioned in
yesterday's article on Disposition Centers, all
troops travel to the reception center in groups by rail. If the
group is large it will by special train, if smaller, then in special
coaches on regular trains.
If you do not have the
required points for discharge, the reception station will send you
on your way as soon as they:
·
bring your pay up to date,
·
issue appropriate clothing
including ribbons
·
give you a medical inspection
·
and cut your orders
All this takes about two
days and then you are on your own --- home and furlough!
Your ticket home and to your new station will be furnished by the
Transportation Officer.

OCCUPATION
Australia has requested
participation in the occupation of Japan. The Aussies base
their request on mutual interest as well as the life and death
importance to the future welfare of their commonwealth.
Unofficial Russian sources continued some slight criticism of
MacArthur's policy claiming that MacArthur is not tough enough.
President Truman spoke out bluntly saying "MacArthur's policy is the
American policy." "Russia as well as other members of the
United Nations have official representatives on MacArthur's staff. If there are legitimate complaints of laxity they should be made
officially and not backbiting, underhanded attacks from unofficial
sources." If the others have any complaints they should take them up
with MacArthur. (ANS)
NAVY TO REDUCE POINTS AS
DEMOBILIZATION DEVELOPS:
The secretary of the Navy further announced today that the Navy
would stick to its point system but reduced the points as the system
develops. The navy will be one-third demobilized by February,
one-half by April, and completely by June.
YANK TO QUIT PUBLICATION
The Editorial staff of Yank, the Army Weekly announced today that
the magazine would cease publication on December 28, 1945.
During its operation Yank has gone to press with 31 editions to over
3,000,000 circulation a week. We hate to see Yank cease because it
has been of real literary as well educational value to the men
in all four of the services.
SENATE DEBATE STILL HOT ON
REENLISTMENT
The U.S. Senate today killed a proposal to increase Army pay $25 per
month but OK'd a continuation of the G.I. bill of Rights, $300
muster out pay, 90 day reenlistment furlough, plus reenlistment
periods of 1 year, 18 months, 2 years and 3 years. An ex-soldier in
the Senate ran afoul of bad weather when he said "conditions inside
the Army other than pay caused failure of the enlistment system."
Some results of this objection were 20 year retirement system.
