When on that furlough, don't forget "You're still a soldier".  To the folks at home you represent the American soldier.  A lot of you and your buddies have made that something to be proud of.  Keep it that way.

When your thirty days are up you will proceed to your next assignment.

However, suppose you have the required points for discharge. In this case the reception center sends you directly to the separation center which is usually at the same post and sometimes in the same building.

At the separation center it usually takes about 48 hours for you to:

  • get a full explanation of what happens including services available

  • have a final type physical examination. Don’t hold anything back as it may affect your future claims

  • draw all your pay and deposits (if any) and the first installment of your mustering out pay.

  • draw whatever new clothing and equipment you need, fresh decorations and ribbons

  • turn in all excess clothing and equipment.  All losses of clothing or equipment must be satisfactorily explained.

  • talk with specially trained counselors about your rights and duties, and benefits as a veteran.

  • get railroad ticket at special reduced rates if desired (you will draw mileage to your home)

  • get discharge papers and emblems for wear with civilian clothing.

  • And then, Buddie, you are out of the army and on your own.  Then you will want to know about all the benefits available to veterans ... better start learning about them now.

    DISTINGUISHED PERSONALITIES ABOARD

"Today our news office was honored by a visit from Mr. Ed Toles, a United States War Correspondent.  Ed is rather conservative and will not talk about himself, but, we have learned from authoritative sources that Mr. Toles has scored several scoops in the ETO.

Mr. Toles has promised to do an article in the very near future and will also do a full page of comics for our Sunday edition.

This is Ed's first trip home after 20 months in the ETO.
