MADAWASKA VICTORY - SEASICK DAILY - 28 SEPTEMBER 1945  (Page of 4)

WHAT ABOUT JOBS AND SMALL BUSINESS

Have you been thinking about this, well if you have here is some dope on the matter:
.. Civil service offers special opportunities for all honorably discharged veterans. Those with service connected disabilities get an addition of 10 points to their Civil service examinations and are placed at the top of the list of men eligible for appointment ahead of all non-veterans. All of which means you don't have to be the highest man in the test to land the job for which you are fitted.  There are also a considerable number of jobs which are open to veterans.
.. In case you're out of work, the GI Bill of Rights protects you.  Under its "readjustment allowance provision, eligible veterans out of a job are entitled to $20 a week for as much as 52 weeks of unemployment, depending on the length of service."
.. If the veterans earnings do not exceed $3 a week, he is considered unemployed. If partially employed,  that is if he is not making $20 a week, he will receive the difference between his actual earnings and $23 a week. That applies to everyone with at least 90 days service after 16 September 1940, and excludes only those with dishonorable discharges.
.. But perhaps you don't want a job.  Maybe you want to open your own business or run your own firm. In that case, the GI Bill of Rights provides a government guarantee of half of any loan you can float from a bank up to a total of $4,000. That is, the government is security for $2,000 and no more.  If the bank is willing, you can borrow more than $4,000 but the U.S. guaranteed security remains at $2,000.
.. Don't kid yourself that its easy to get such a loan.  It isn't.  You'll have to prove both to the Veterans Administration and the Bank that you're a good risk, that you have the experience at running a business or farm that you're buying and that the price is fair and that you have sufficient security for that part of the loan not guaranteed by the government.
.. It should be remembered that the loan provisions of the GI Bill are in addition to the loan functions of the Farm Security Administration and the Federal Housing Authority. In other words, you can arrange for part of the necessary loan for a farm or home through your bank and the balance through one of these agencies.
.. Practically any bank or lending institution will have the information and necessary forms for a business or farm loan. However the first thing you ought to do is apply for all the information you can get from the Division of Small Business, Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce, Farm Security

Administration and like agencies in the States.
.. The Ship's Library has a number of pamphlets on small business opportunities and farming.
