Lt. Gen. W. F. Ulmer, Jr. told the 508th vets he had been to Blanding before them. His father, Capt. Ulmer, had been garrisoned at Camp Blanding when Ulmer was a youth and he remembered the camp well although, he said, "it has changed a lot since then." (Read more about Gen. Ulmer) |
Ken 'Rock' Merritt President of the 508th Association welcomed his comrades and recalled the days when many of them had been trained at Blanding. His comments regarding what it felt like to be a "lowly, lonely Private" brought gales of laughter. Rock survived basic training, jump school and the war. He served 30 years in the Army and retired as a
Command Sergeant Major.
