Arkansas, 1943

James registered for the draft ca. 1941 but did not enter service until 23 March 1943.  Note that his designated person of contact is his mother, Effie.  She is always listed as primary during his entire service career.  The following letter is undated but is is presumed that he was at Camp Robinson for basic training.  Pvt Stauffer late volunteered for parachutist training and on 27 August 1943, he was transferred from the Parachute School to Company F, 508th PIR.

Hello Mom

How are you I hope OK. I still remain the same and was sure glad to hear from you. I hope you don’t have to clean house too long so you can write a few letters. Yes mother about that five dollars to be paid to Joe Cloghale. No I didn’t get a     . I may of written that card that sounded sort of that way. There is no hurry to pay him and you need not to pay him until you see fit. So don’t worry about it. I may be even able to pay him later on. But don’t you pay him and go robbing yourself. I would like a few pieces of underwear. I am 34” around the waist and 38” around the chest for shirts. I need underwear rather badly and if you can get some white woolen socks would be doing me a big favor. Their really hard to get around here but you still have to find them.

Boy where is everyone getting the money to buy up all the houses it really going to be a changed neighborhood. I hope they do a little fixing up. It’ll really make a great change.

I hope Aunt Gertie don’t have the trouble with Uncle Horace like she did with Lizzy.

I sure would have been nice to of seen the boys who were home on furlough. I guess everything happens when your away.

Oh yes Bob Armstrong and I spent Sunday afternoon and really had a swell time. He called me up about 10:00 on Sun Morn and it scared me for a moment but was glad to hear Bob’s voice. I caught a bus over to his camp and then we went to town and went sight seeing for about two hours and came back happy and hope to spend next Sunday together. I sure hope Imy made 8th grade exam and I wish her best of luck and congratulate her if she did. And for God Sake make her go to school. Well I’ll close for now. So Solong mommy and

             I’ll remain

            Your Soldier Boy #2
